Herewith the full text of the question the Greeks were asked on Sunday and to which they replied with a resounding OXI!
In case that’s all Greek to you – here with a translation. You may find it a little dense:
“The Greek people are asked to decide with their vote whether to accept the outline of the agreement submitted by the European Union, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund at the Eurogroup of 25/06/15 and is made up of two parts which constitute their unified proposal:The first document is entitled: Reforms for the completion of the current program and beyond and the second is Preliminary Debt Sustainability Analysis.
You will note that the choices were not placed alongside each other, but one on top of the other. A cynic might suspect this was deliberate.
A translation of the two documents from Euro English Diplospeak into English English is not available.
The previous time Greece held a referendum was in 1974. The military dictatorship had collapsed. The public were asked a easily understandable question. Do you want a King, or a Republic?
They chose a Republic… it now risks becoming a Banana Republic, but that would have been the case even if they had voted Yes instead of the resounding N0 they have delivered.
Now watch Brussels/Paris/Berlin for those who believe in Ever Closer Euro desperately try to salvage something from the mess they’ve all got themselves. They cooked the books and then poured 19 litres of political philosophy into what was at best a 5 litre economic bottle.
