LIBYA/CONFLICT – There are few signs that any agreement about a national government will end Libya’s agony. Over the weekend Islamist militants and forces loyal to Libya’s Tobruk-based House of Representatives fought in Benghaz leaving at least 12 people dead. This follows Friday’s U.S. bombing of an ISIS training camp near the Tunisian border at the other end of the country. The air strike killed at least 50 people, mostly thought to be ISIS fighters. 2 Serbian hostages also died in the bombing.
IRAN/S-300 – Revolutionary Guard Brig. Gen Massoud Jazayeri says that Russia is about to make the first delivery of the S-300 missile defence system. There is no confirmation of this.
SYRIA/CEASEFIRE – Russian Foreign Minister and his American counterpart John Kerry have reached a ‘provisional agreement for a cessation of hostilities in Syria. Syria’s President Assad said he was ready to abide by a ceasfire on the conditions that “terrorists” did not use the period to make gains, and that the countries backing them suspended support.
SYRIA/CONFLICT – Despite the above, violence has continued. truce, At least 80 people were killed in 4 bomb attacks that hit Damascus. This followed twin car bombs in Homs which killed at least 46 people.
SYRIA/SAUDI ARABIA – Conscious that the ‘ceasefire’ is unlikely to hold the Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir said his country supports changing the balance of forces by supplying surface-to-air missiles to “moderate’ Syrian rebels.
USA/RUSSIA/SYRIA – The U.S. has informed the Russian military in ‘general terms’ the secret locations of America’s Special Forces ‘advisor’ units operating inside Syria in order to protect them from airstrikes. The move is part of the deconfliction procedures between the two countries as their forces come into proximity with each other in Syria.
CHINA/U.S. – In an article which underlines the debate ongoing in China about its defence policy a commentary piece in the Communist Party controlled People’s Daily supports firing warning shots or even ramming U.S. warships sailing close to Chinese-controlled islands in the Paracels. This may just be a media warning shot across the bows of the U.S which has twice sent warships to patrol near the islands to make the point that they are in international waters. Di
AUSTRALIA/MALAYSIA – The Australian government has issued a warning to its citizens that terrorists may be planning attacks in and around the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur. It recommends that Australians avoid the beach resorts and islands of eastern Sabah.
WATCH – For murmurs that Turkey will eventually cross the Syrian border to prevent the Syrian Kurds joining up the territory it controls along the border in the east of Syria to the pocket it holds in the West.
